Switch model, rotate, or delete your API key

Common BYOK chores on the Skrebe Settings page — change provider, switch models, rotate a key, remove a key.

Once you've set up your own API key, the rest is housekeeping. Everything below lives on the same screen: open Settings from the user menu, then look for the AI Provider card.

Switch model

You can change the model independently of the provider.

  1. On Settings → AI Provider, find the Model row.
  2. Pick a model from the dropdown.
  3. The change is saved instantly — your next translate or proofread run uses the new model.

The model dropdown is disabled when you're on a provider that has a free demo and you haven't added your own key. Adding a key unlocks model selection.

Switch provider

  1. On Settings → AI Provider, use the Provider dropdown (Google, Anthropic, or OpenAI).
  2. The status badge updates:
    • Active — you have your own key saved for this provider.
    • Demo — Skrebe's free fallback is available (rate-limited).
    • Required — this provider needs your own key to work.
  3. The model list refreshes to match the chosen provider.

Switching provider doesn't delete any keys you've saved for other providers — they stay attached to whichever provider they belong to.

Rotate a key (replace with a new one)

Use this when your old key was leaked, hit a quota cap, or moved to a new account.

  1. Generate a new key on the provider's site. The Get a key link under the input goes straight there.
  2. Back on Settings → AI Provider, paste the new key into the API Key field.
  3. Click Save. The new key replaces the old one in place — no separate delete step needed.

You can press the eye icon next to the input to show the key (hidden by default) before you save.

Delete a key

  1. On Settings → AI Provider, make sure the provider whose key you want to remove is selected.
  2. Click Remove next to the API Key field.
  3. Confirm — the key is wiped from this browser immediately.

If the provider has a demo fallback, the status badge flips back to Demo and Skrebe keeps working at the free rate. If the provider has no fallback (Required), translations and proofread on that provider stop until you paste a new key or switch providers.

Where keys live

Does Skrebe upload my key anywhere?The key is sent to Skrebe's server on each request so the server can call the provider on your behalf. It is not persisted server-side.
What happens on another device?Each device is independent. Paste your key on each browser where you use Skrebe.
What if I clear my browser data?The key goes with it. Paste it again on Settings.
